Cod and Steel Student Exchange
Up to six McMaster University students from Hamilton and up to six Memorial University students from Fogo Island will participate in a summer employment exchange from May 23 to August 31, 2020.
A small island off the north east coast of Newfoundland, Fogo is an exceptional community from any number of perspectives – historically, geologically, culturally. Located in the heart of central Canada, Hamilton is the third largest city in the most populace province and is the steel and metals manufacturing capital of the country.
Both these places, are undergoing dramatic transformations in their traditional industries. This exchange will provide a rare opportunity for students to encounter very different parts of their country and see how they are connected.
Applications for 2020 have already been accepted and student positions have been offered.
Designing Canada is a collaboration between The Socrates Project and The Wilson Leadership Scholar Award to present a one-day conference for undergraduate students. It can be a challenge to see how what students are learning in the classroom applies to the world at large. Designing Canada provides the chance for students to see how experts in their fields have applied their own background knowledge and problem-solving styles to complex Canadian issues. It also gives students a chance to learn more about issues that may not have been on their radar – and to start thinking about how they can start addressing some of our most pressing needs.Learn More
