QUANTOPIA is the opening performance of The Reception, a two-day conference showcasing performances and exhibitions by artists from black, Indigenous, and racialized communities. A celebration of the history of the Internet, QUANTOPIA is a tribute to the depth and high stakes of free speech and creative expression involved in our daily use of media. Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky creates a multimedia journey exploring the network evolution through live loops and layers of sound enveloped by data visualization. Backed by live acoustic musicians and singers, Miller uses 3D visuals and sounds to perform a live “internet symphony” on stage. The hour-long experience illuminates ever-present issues of inclusion and exclusion and echo chambers.
Miller is a composer, multimedia artist and writer whose work immerses audiences in a blend of genres, global culture, and environmental and social issues. His work has appeared in many museums and galleries, including the Andy Warhol Museum and the Ludwig Museum. His large-scale, multimedia performance pieces include Rebirth of a Nation and Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica, which was commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music for the Next Wave Festival (2009).
