Two digital revolutions – computing and communication – have radically transformed our economy and lives. A third digital revolution is here: fabrication. While digital fabrication promises us self-sufficient cities and the ability to make (almost) anything, it could also lead to massive inequality. The first two digital revolutions caught most of the world flat-footed; thanks to Designing Reality that won’t be true this time.
Author of Designing Reality: How to Survive and Thrive in the Third Digital Revolution, Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld is a professor in the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. He is a former dean and professor in the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and a former faculty member in MIT’s Engineering Systems Division. This talk builds on Designing Reality and his current research on new institutional arrangements that can co-evolve with accelerating rates of change in technology and society.
