What are democracy’s defining traits? Andreas Kalyvas looks at the “how,” “when,” and “by whom” of democracy by understanding it as the struggle of the poor to constitute their common life as free and equal.
Kalyvas is an associate professor in the Department of Politics at The New School for Social Research. He has taught at Columbia University, University of Michigan, University of Barcelona, as well as in Germany, Poland, and South Africa. Kalyvas’s work focuses on democratic theory and the history of political thought from ancient Greek and Roman to modern and contemporary continental political theory. He is currently completing a book manuscript entitled, Legalizing Tyranny: Republicanism, Dictatorship, and the Enemy Within. Kalyvas is co-director of the Columbia University Seminar on Political and Social Thought.
